Beauty notebook: Products to help you through the menopause.

The face treatments: could magnolia be the key?
While skin dryness, one outcome of a drop in oestrogen during menopause, is easy to address, some of the subtle ways in which the face changes at this time are trickier to broach because they are harder to put into words: it is a challenge to explain why the line of your jaw looks different (fuzzier definition here is one downside to loss of skin elasticity) – and the other nuances of menopausal face ageing – to anyone who has not experienced menopause, let alone a novice beauty counter assistant. Unsurprisingly many turn to cosmetic surgery at this point, feeling their needs are better served by a surgeon than a serum. But while some surgery (and facial acupuncture) are useful, the value of an integrated approach should not be underrated.

The products that might make swine flu a little easier to bear
Sarah Vine
I like to think, in my more flippant moments, that what every working mother needs now and again is a non-fatal hospitalisation. You know, something to warrant a few nights away from home, but not serious enough to require a will. Just enough time to catch up on some sleep, take a few mental steps back – and generally get the whole world off your back for a couple of days.
If that sounds drastic, it’s because it is. Almost all working mothers spend their time running just to stay still. And every now and again, they just go phut. I did it a few weeks ago when I got the flu. Most unpleasant it was too. But it did bring with it one bonus: for a few blissful days after the worst symptoms had subsided, the pace of life slowed to a gentle jog. I finally saw the bottom of the washing basket, the in-tray was splendidly empty, and my reproachful to-do list dwindled (almost) to nothing.

As soon as you walk into the reception from the lift, you are greeted by the smell of sweet orange aromatherapy oils. Then there's the life-size Art-Deco bronze statue of a nymph holding a lamp – a promise of what we can look like if we keep up the membership fees.

Set in its own woodland, the Monart spa in County Wexford offers the weary traveller a tranquil refuge and a relaxed attitude to rehab
The sky is the colour of slate but, as I turn the final corner of a winding country lane, a shot of sunlight breaks through to illuminate the gamut of green surrounding me. This is an appropriate beacon for my arrival at Monart, a destination spa set in its own 100 acres of woodland in an area aptly named "the Still". The waiter tells me later as I sit on the terrace at 8pm, which is almost unheard of in Ireland, that the name is in reference to the area having its own unique microclimate – although I have a sneaking suspicion it has more to do with a certain local whiskey maker who went by the name of Jameson.
